Technology And Seminary (Church) Formation

In an encounter with Rev. Fr.Paul, One of the formats of this seminary and as well as a pioneer of this same seminary. We spoke on numerous topic on health, academics, technology and its effect on the seminary over the course of time. He gave me a brief history on how technology used to be back in 1988. He elaborated much on difficulties they encountered in sending and receiving information in those days.

The only source of information sending was the use of postal systems and telephones. Unlike today where mobile phones and laptops have made sending and receiving message easier, their only form of communication was letter writing and had to rely on noisy radios for current affairs. He related how even after he had left Town there was only one internet cafe on the road.

Twenty-nine years down the line, one can clearly see differences in terms of Technology in the seminary. Technology is a general terms for the processes by which human beings fashion tools and machines to increase their control and understanding of the material environment (Merritt R.H, 2008). Today people sit in the comfort of their rooms and access all forms of information they need. This really tells us that technology has come a long way in enhancing the daily activities of people.

The Role Of Technology In the Seminary(Church)

I will briefly describe some benefits of technology and its side effects with regards to the four pillars of formation in the seminary(Church), namely: Human, Intellectual, Pastoral and Spiritual formation.

Firstly in Human formation, interaction and socialization has become so easy through the use of social media applications like Facebook, Instagram, etc. Seminarians get the chance to associate themselves with other seminarians from different seminaries across the country and beyond. Again they get the chance to interact with Catholics across the world which all add up their level of human understanding and development.

Secondly and very significant is the effect of technology on the intellectual aspect of formation. Technology used during lectures has been very beneficial in helping the students understand and absorb what they are being taught. For instance, since there are a number of students who are better at visual learning. Presentations during lectures let the students follow notes and lectures given as opposed to simply sitting down and listening to the lecturer teach.

Technology Learning Process On Social Media

Educational software such as Britannica, Encarta and among others are used to supplement of books and journals. These programs make available to students quizzes, tests, activities and study questions that help students continue with the learning process when they are out of the classroom. Again lecturers make use of social media platforms to send study materials to students especially through electronic mails. Students make use of computers and projectors to make presentations and also the use of the internet to carry out research on a variety of topics for their essays and research on a variety of topics for their essays and research papers.

On the subject of pastoral formation, Seminarians have developed a strong desire to spread the word of God through social media. This boils down to the fact that Evangelize through social media platforms are faster and easier. Radios and television program such as Church Digest add up to the knowledge on pastoral activities for the seminarians. Since they provide pastoral updates on the various dioceses across the country and beyond.

Spiritual Formation Of Technology On Seminary (Church)

Finally on the Spiritual formation, technology has been beneficial in many ways. Seminarians can now get access to online spiritual music and masses from the Vatican radio and other Church websites with just a click or a touch.

Prayer and other spiritual reading have been made simple and easily accessible with the help of Smartphones and laptops with internet access. Daily mass reflections and other inspiring quotes from saints are also accessed from Catholic websites.

In spite of the above benefits of technology, a wrong usage of it can cause great effects on the individual.

First and foremost, it can lead one into grave sins against God and man. One may be tempted to access unholy materials. Again, addiction to technological devices like cell phones, laptop, and by extension to social media, may cause one to waste much time and money on things like video games, movies and others which may affect one’s academic and spiritual performances.

In conclusion, technology is good servant which one needs to master for fruitful benefits. It should not be a master for us to serve. We must make good technology in our daily lives in our order to enhance our daily life activities. We must focus on the best out of them in our formation as future priests.
